Social Awareness, Enviromental Cleanliness, Waste ManagementAbstrak
This research is motivated by the low level of social awareness among the community in Bontolebang Village, Selayar Islands Regency, regarding maintaining environmental cleanliness, which has led to an increase in cases of environmentally-related diseases such as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). The main issues raised include low community participation, the bad habit of dumping waste directly into the sea, and the lack of adequate waste management facilities. The purpose of this study was to analyze community social awareness, identify inhibiting factors, and describe waste management practices at the research site.
The method used was a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with 10 informants consisting of village officials, community leaders, and residents, and documentation studies.
The results indicate that low environmental awareness is triggered by an attitude of "indifference," the habit of disposing of waste without sorting, and the absence of clear written village regulations (Perdes). The main obstacle identified was the lack of Temporary Disposal Sites (TPS) and waste processing equipment, leading residents to tend to burn waste or dump it on the coast due to the limited geographical area. The role of village governments and community leaders has been implemented through outreach and role models, but has not been maximized due to limited physical infrastructure and budgetary support.
